Increasing need for data and AI is creating unprecedented demand for data-center capacity, while social and regulatory pressure demands reduced energy and water consumption. Serial hyperscale, co- location, and "edge" clients are driving innovation in design and industrialization, using digital libraries of configurable, scalable solutions for repeatable, standardized designs that can be amended to suit local codes and site constraints. Benefits include that solutions capture and optimize for a wide range of stakeholder needs. To meet global demand for affordable and sustainable housing, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry must streamline the design-to-construction process. Modular builders—like Factory_OS—are doing just that by productizing their building systems to generate customizable buildings from a catalog of construction-ready unit types. With Factory_OS, Autodesk Research has developed new design methods that connect their building unit catalog with AI-powered generative design to create multiple design options. This case study demonstrates how new procedural design systems enabled rapid, no-code design exploration while balancing trade-offs between cost, carbon, and habitability. The study also showcases how the prototype made it onto Autodesk Forma using the developer extension model to deliver customized novel design functionality and metrics. Going beyond existing capabilities, Autodesk Research and Autodesk Forma enabled Factory_OS to rapidly and intuitively evaluate new development projects in a data-informed manner.

For today's architects to meet their ambitious sustainability goals toward net zero, new building materials that can sequester carbon emissions and replace petroleum-based products must rapidly enter the construction industry. In this session, we'll look at a case study where leaders in industrialized construction, composite manufacturing, and biomaterials technology joined Autodesk researchers. Together, they developed a carbon sequestering facade system by replacing the typical petroleum-based foam within fiberglass reinforced facade panels with mycelium fungi composites, a carbon-negative biomaterial. The session will describe the developmental journey from material research and performance validation to the use of Autodesk Forma and Autodesk Fusion 360 software to design the facade for a Californian housing development that meets sustainability, habitability, and construction project goals. Early stage design has arguably the biggest impact on project cost. By nature, these decisions are based on scarce information, which results in tons of repetitive work and a massive waste of resources. Historically, both Forma and TestFit saw an opportunity to reinvent early stage planning to create better cities. While tackling different sides of the problem based on their respective markets, both companies focused on maximizing automation to make better-informed decisions faster, saving time and money. In this Lab, participants will use Forma to set up their own project and start designing and experimenting! We'll cover how to use our rapid operational energy analysis to see and build intuition on the impact of compactness, orientation, and with a few other basic building parameters on operation energy. We'll dig into our AI-powered operational energy analysis to understand how a building's form and primary materials impact the energy consumption and subsequent carbon. We will look at the tradeoff between these ad other analyses, including sunlight, noise, utci and wind to empower you to balance trade-offs and learn how to design in an informed outcome based way. The built environment isn't optimized for a single objective; you need all of this information in the same place and with Forma you get that all in the browser. We will also showcase how Forma is engineered for collaboration.

Due to our unique involvement in the Forma pilot program we would like to share our experience with the AECO community. The Forma-to-Revit-and-back-to-Forma workflow (via Forma Plugin) is a powerful tool for architects and designers seeking to streamline their design process. Forma provides an intuitive platform for creating complex geometries and analysis while Revit's advanced BIM tools enable designers to create detailed building models. The ability to seamlessly transfer between the two programs allows for easy collaboration and communication between team members, resulting in a more efficient and effective design process. This workflow is particularly useful for architects and designers looking to create complex designs in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional methods. By integrating the strengths of Forma and Revit, designers can create more accurate, energy efficient and detailed models, which can be used for construction and documentation purposes.

There are still obstacles to sustainable design. Construction professionals know they must build faster, more efficiently, and more sustainably to meet global demands. The industry is moving away from waste and inefficiency, and is adopting smarter processes, connected teams, and workflows that ensure the right people have access to the data they need to make timely and confident decisions. Storytelling has been present within architecture as long as the domain itself has existed. Initially, it was done with hand representations of volumes and narratives told over the sheets of paper. As the technology progresses, new ways of telling stories emerge: Renderings became easier and cheaper, causing their function to evolve. Industry saw a shift from only using them for end results (artifacts) to real-time renderings focused on driving communication and decision making. Now, with the democratization of AI, we are facing new possibilities: Visualization for ideation, but also for even faster creation of realistic outputs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative design (GD) are transforming the architecture, engineering, and construction industry toward a more efficient design process. But is the built environment in danger of losing social and equity values as a result? The powerful combination of GD and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has the potential to assist architects in improving building functionality and sustainability, enhancing value for architects, developers, and residents. However, ethical and social sustainability values may be overlooked if the metrics of the GD and GAI are not instructed to identify and prioritize them. This class will combine findings from a multidisciplinary research project from Carnegie Mellon University, and real-life architectural projects by HED. Learn how to prioritize important equity and social sustainability values in human-in-the-loop AI powered design frameworks, making ethical and socio-sustainable design decisions measurable and transparent to all stakeholders, for a more equitable and resilient built environment.

Data-driven design in architecture has the potential to drastically enhance the quality of projects. It's not solely focused on enhancing the end result; data-driven design also streamlines the architectural process itself. It goes further than just streamlining tasks; it's about improving the quality of living environments and assuring sustainability. In this session, we'll tell the story of the journey involved in designing a residential building. By combining data from various sources, we looked at the most-optimal options for a case we studied in Warsaw, Poland. Among these sources are passive solar design, green roofs, wind analysis, building materials assessment, energy use efficiency, resource conservation, and waste reduction—reducing carbon footprint. Additionally, we incorporated some urban-scale geographic information system (GIS) data. All of that would not be possible without Autodesk Forma software, which played the critical role. For us, the role of an architect will never be the same after this journey.
