This class explores the avenues for using Revit Structure—from traditional architecture and engineering projects to process plant application. It seems like architects jumped on board with Revit®-based software from the beginning because it helps them produce more detailed designs and really doesn't add a lot of additional work. However, engineers have traditionally avoided the switch from AutoCAD® to Revit. In this roundtable, we will discuss the benefits of using Revit from both the architectural and engineering point of view. Architects can explain why engineers need to use Revit and engineers can defend sticking with AutoCAD. Construction managers can also weigh in on why it helps when the engineer produces a 3D model.

Sundt Construction faced a difficult site work package that included landfill remediation. During the project pursuit, Sundt defined a new process to generate volumetric comparisons from UAS-captured data; align with the project coordinate system; and produce an engineered report. This reduced the risk of over excavation, enabled everyone on the team to see how earthwork progressed, and captured construction progress in a meaningful way. Calculating quantities in Civil 3D software produced accurate quantities and an intuitive visual, and enabled the flexibility required to track 6 different quantity types. This class will discuss the process used to bring new value through these construction technologies and demonstrate the process of generating the data.

In 2017, the U.K. government funded an analysis of the various costs associated with a typical construction project, and identified that for every pound spent, just more than 51% results in residual asset value for the client. The Construction Innovation Hub (CIH) was subsequently established with the vision to cause change and demonstrate better solutions to deliver the U.K. government £35 billion pipeline. The chosen strategy was to develop, prototype, and test platform solutions (pDFMA), with a common “kit of parts.” This would demonstrate the delivery of better outcomes for social infrastructure. Integral to the strategy was the use of a new digital toolchain to unlock the approach. Grimshaw Architects, Buro Happold engineers, and Mace Construction were commissioned to develop a new suite of configurators to enable the "kit of parts” approach during procurement and delivery.

This session will look at how structural engineers can visualize, coordinate, and resolve constructability issues early in design by using Qnect for Revit software. We will show how Qnect for Revit helps young structural engineers develop holistic understandings of how a building is put together, enhancing their awareness of interdisciplinary coordination, constructability, erectability and 3D-modeling best practices. This class will discuss how reality capture BIM (Building Information Modeling) was utilized at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by multiple architects, engineers, construction managers, construction engineers, and building owners. This class is a case study on the integration of Revit by a small to mid-sized engineering firm working in building construction. The class will explore the implementation of Revit by delving into a few BIM projects. The study will show that Revit is not restricted to large projects; rather it is well suited to the “everyday” buildings, such as housing, schools, offices, and more. The focus is on experiences the firm had along the way from CAD to BIM such as detailing, coordination, and standardization. Those experiences are lessons that will increase any firm’s proficiency using Revit without sacrificing production. The class will also show the collaboration between architectural and engineering companies on multi-disciplinary Revit projects. In the end, we hope to show architects and engineers of any sized company for any sized project how to integrate Revit into project delivery and how new technologies such as Autodesk A360 will further increase the efficiency of the BIM.

Structural engineers manage design changes and updates on a daily basis. Coordinating models and drawings while maintaining quality is always a challenge—not to mention working remotely or from home. The DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) principle is an effective approach to managing change during design and construction processes. Linking Revit models with structural analysis tools is one of the biggest benefits and challenges structural engineering teams still encounter. In this class, we will look at best practices for keeping structural models and workflows DRY, including linking models between Revit, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advance Steel software; managing, coordinating, and sharing models using BIM 360 software; and reviewing construction and fabrication drawings for quality control with BIM 360. Incorporating some of these approaches into your workflows will help you keep up with the pace of change.

With rapid growth in technology—especially in manufacturing processes—coordination between designers, engineers, and shop-floor CNC (computer numerical control) programmers is a challenging scenario. Manufacturers cannot always make designs created by designers and engineers, and they send the designs back to the design team for modification in the part model. Additionally, sometimes the right tools may not be available on the shop floor. To overcome these problems, designers and engineers should obtain a basic knowledge of CNC programming and CNC-code generation, which could reduce the time to market and enhance the company's return on investment. This class covers the steps involved in importing the CAD Model into Inventor HSM integrated CAM Solution for Inventor 2015 software. This process reduces the errors involved during importation and further enables designers and engineers to generate CNC codes and set up models for manufacturability. We will also discuss workflow regarding sending the codes to a machine.
