Since Wisconsin Department of Transportation adopted AutoCAD Civil 3D software, its standards and workflows have evolved in response to its internal users and its external consultants. With each release, new tools and workflows were developed to make continuous improvement in the design results. Each change affected the large user base, so this process required careful planning, testing, and timing. There was also a significant effort involved in sharing standards with users outside of the network in the simplest and most reliable method possible. This session features AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Using Revit schedules, assemblies, tags, views, interference checking, and new features in Revit 2017 software, we can produce fabrication documentation inside of the Revit software interface, which enables us to be fully coordinated with design consultants. While Fabrication Parts was introduced in 2016, it was in Revit 2017 software that they became fully functional while remaining in a single interface. We’ll cover how to model using Fabrication Parts; how to convert the design model into Fabrication Parts; how to use assembly views to create spools sheets and details; how to annotate Fabrication Parts in plan view and 3D; how to coordinate with other consultants in Revit software; how new Revit 2017 software features relate to Fabrication Parts; and how to import existing as-built conditions from Fabrication CADmep software into a new renovation project. This 60-minute round-table session will discuss methodologies for standardizing multidiscipline style collections, which are the associated libraries and methodologies available to monitor and enforce project-wide adherence to those standards. This discussion will bring into focus the challenges that arise when working with not only multiple firms but also for inner company departments tasked with developing cohesive plan sets that are both 'intelligent' and congruent throughout. Topics open for discussion will include the use of software to check standards; custom programming to effectively check that system configurations match inside each company; and preconfigured add-on packages provided to each consultant with standards embedded into the templates. We will also discuss the questions of which consultant should lead the standard/style development and whether there should be a project-based standard and what it is that should drive those standards. Virtual reality (VR) isn't always for architects to show off their pretty designs! Viewing mechanical and electrical rooms before they’re constructed, and before equipment is purchased, is important from a constructability standpoint. Just because something fits in a space, doesn't mean the design works. Having a contractor, operations manager, or client walk-through and experience the space well before construction can help clarify the design intent. They can give insight on design “flaws” and layout preferences, which will help the designer to produce an efficient and clean design.
