This class is the next level up from the “Structural Design to Fabrication: Revit and Advance Steel—Buddies for Life” class at Autodesk University 2020. Once you have designed, simulated, and generated the fabrication drawings, the next step is making them available to the field teams. On top of that, tracking the changes and ensuring the site teams have access to the latest documentation is one of the main challenges. This class will focus on the various office-to-field workflows you can use to share the latest and greatest structural BIM (Building Information Modeling) data and fabrication drawings with the extended teams in the field. You will learn about the Autodesk Docs workflows that come in the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection that you can use to share and compare different versions of structural BIM data and fabrication drawings for effective decision-making processes in the field. This class will also cover the process of creating and managing issues related to structural field workflows.

New tools in Revit software have enhanced the ability of structural engineers and detailers to create shop drawings and fabrication models for structural components. This class will demonstrate the Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow from structural models to fabrication to construction, all within Autodesk, Inc., software. We will learn how to take a structural engineer's Revit software model and turn it into a fabrication model and create shops drawings for rebar, steel framing and miscellaneous metals, and precast concrete. We will demonstrate new rebar modeling and annotation tools within Revit software, such as partitions and automatic bar-mark numbering, and we'll learn how to create rebar shop drawings and concrete lift drawings. We'll take steel framing from Revit software to Advance Steel software to detail the structural steel and miscellaneous metals and to create steel shop drawings. We will also show how to use parts, assemblies, and new structural framing and modeling tools to create precast concrete models and shops drawings.

In this class we will cover the workflow for the design of steel and structures, starting with a focus on the interoperability between structural design and steel fabrication programs from Autodesk, Inc.

The presentation will provide an in-depth discussion of fabrication and the 2016 AGC BIM Forum Level of Development (LOD) Specification featuring one of the specifications’ authors. The framework of the discussion will consider the LOD Specification that defines models on a scale of 100 to 500, with a particular focus of LOD 350, which the speaker originally authored and introduced to the LOD Specification committee. The fabrication focus will provide practical examples of LOD from 300 to 350 to 400 for structural steel, concrete, cold-formed metal, enclosures, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing). We will discuss how architects, mechanical engineers, construction managers, subcontractors, and fabricators use structural element models. This will demonstrate how to use LOD to define team expectations of what should be modeled. We will show practical examples of model detail issues, along with effective approaches to resolving the challenges using the LOD Specification as an early Building Information Modeling (BIM) planning tool. Finally, you'll learn how to generate fabrication drawings and NC files from your structural model.

You’ll create a structural model from scratch and then insert automated connections between structural sections. You’ll also learn how to insert more-complex structural elements, such as stairs. You’ll then generate fabrication drawings of the structural model you’ve created. Finally, you’ll generate bills of materials (BOMs) and cutting files, such as DXFs and NCs, from your structural model.

Advance Steel software can be used for a diverse range of structural-steel modeling and fabrication projects. When it comes to large projects, the right approach is essential for project health and management, on-time documentation delivery, and later use of the project. In this class we will examine different methods of working on large projects in Advance Steel. We will start with what makes a project “large” and when special considerations would be needed. Then you will learn how to approach the 3D modeling phase based on project characteristics and available resources in your company. We will discuss using xrefs, split models, and multi-user methods, with their characteristics and challenges. Further on, we’ll discuss the detailing phase and generation of the full documentation for fabrication. The class will include performance comments based on experiences with previous projects, as well as best practices and recommendations for working with large projects.

By the end of this class, you will have a good sense of when you need to use the steel fabrication tools in Revit versus using Advance Steel.

We have combined manufacturing tools and processes to the construction industry norms, using Fusion 360 software and Autodesk Generative Design software to design a series of components to be key on the facade of a new headquarters office in the Netherlands. Each of them is unique, taking into consideration structural capacity, the fabrication method, material, and cost. Sensors have been allocated on them, letting us get real-time data to feed the next generation of components (if ever in need of replacement), know the facade’s performance, predict its behavior, and act on time.
