Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is a programming environment that allows you to automate tasks using the Visual Basic programming language. This hands-on lab explores how to access and use the VBA integrated development environment (VBAIDE) and work with the AutoCAD object model. You learn to work with data, manipulate AutoCAD software objects, get input from a user, store values, work with basic conditionals, and other programming concepts. This is a beginner-level class for VBA programming and is not something you want to take if you already have experience with VBA programming.

The technology and tools for computational design in the built environment have never been more powerful or progressive. To complement their specific discipline knowledge, the current and next generation of designers and engineers entering the global workforce are armed with skills ranging from sketching to programming to Building Information Modeling (BIM). As buildings have grown in complexity so too has the power and ubiquity of simulation tools used by different specialist disciplines, with information and processes getting more disconnected up until data is transferred to a common format for delivery. It is time to shift focus away from data toward the spaces between the data. By extrapolating recent innovations in structural engineering processes—such as real-time feedback and gesture-based simulation using Robot Structural Analysis software—we will explore the possibilities of multidisciplinary building simulation using visual programming applications such as Dynamo software to control Revit software and other packages.

This lab is an introduction to customizing Inventor software using the software’s programming interface. Inventor software is a general-purpose design tool, but as an Inventor software user you have unique needs. Using Inventor software’s Application Programming Interface (API) you can customize Inventor software to be a tool specifically for you. Writing programs can often be intimidating, but this lab will cover the very basics of using Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and Inventor software’s programming interface to create custom applications. You’ll have hands-on experience creating your own program that works with Inventor software to drive parameters and work with iProperties.

This class will describe how BuroHappold is using Dynamo with Revit to revolutionize their concept and schematic design phases. Visual programming has allowed us to use iterative design to show the influence of minute architectural changes to our MEP design. This allows us to communicate quickly, effectively, and visually with the entire project team. Automated zoning diagrams for heating, cooling, ventilation, electrical loads, and fire rating were generated iteratively. Additionally, Dynamo-powered automated calculations were utilized for plumbing pipe sizing, storm riser sizing, roof drain placement, and pressurization. We have also used the schematic level Revit model to accomplish space planning for risers and MERs. The utilization of Dynamo for Revit in early design has allowed us to deliver a faster, smarter, more creative, and better communicated building. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the limitless possibilities for Dynamo in early phases of design.

This class will present how real-life architectural projects have used Dynamo Studio software to accelerate complex Building Information Modeling (BIM) challenges within Revit software and Navisworks software. This class will explain how Dynamo Studio software with PythonScript is the essential missing link in the BIM process. Attendees will also learn the improvements to the user interface upgrades in version 0.8 of Dynamo visual programming language extension and how to consolidate their coding using Code Blocks.

Generative design is a design method in which the output is generated by a set of rules or an algorithm. It is based on parametric modeling and it is a fast method of exploring design possibilities. Dynamo is a generative design application equipped with a user friendly interface based on Visual Programming. It’s a language which provides users ability to create geometry through scripts without any deep programming knowledge and experience. It allows designers and engineers to create geometry relationships based on rules and logic rather than traditional sculpting/push-pull manipulations and allows to generate geometry which normally would be very time consuming. This session will focus on some aspects of the generative design focused on detail modelling based on surfaces and geometry (complex and irregular 3d patterns, random geometry and fractal geometry) and show how these designs can be integrated into Alias and Alias SpeedForm models.

Basic understanding of computer programming and scripting is helpful, but not required. This is a full-day class, including networking opportunities over breakfast, lunch, and drinks. Participants will share one computer for every 2 people to encourage exchange.

Adaptive components and advanced mass-modelling tools have been implemented in Revit since 2009 but are still ignored by many architectural practices assuming that Revit is a mere BIM tool for the detailed design phase. In this class, you will experience the potential of Revit for practical early stage design through a real case study: the A1 building in the new Baoshan Park in Shanghai, the landmark of the whole urban development. We will go through the design process used to manage the design of the complex shape and of the advanced façade. You will learn how we managed the design merely inside the Revit environment with massing, divided surfaces, surface patterns, and adaptive components. You will then learn how the same model could be created using Dynamo visual programming. Finally, you will experience how to create enhanced curtain panels with embedded sun-shading using Dynamo and Radiance. This class will demonstrate simple workflows in Dynamo, Python, and Revit.
