As mentioned in the introduction, Autodesk always recommends that you test your upgrade prior to go-live.
00:11
If you already have a test server, you can do a backup from production and restore it to the test server,
00:16
and then upgrade the test server, 2 versions at a time, to the final version.
00:20
If you need to create a separate test server, and/or if you wish to have it after the upgrade,
00:25
or you can use the server that you are migrating to for test purposes.
00:29
So in this case, you're going to a new server.
00:31
You're going to test it on the new server.
00:33
It's all ready.
00:34
You can then use that for testing, and then redo the backup and restore when you're ready to go live on the new server,
00:43
as opposed to starting all over again.
00:47
Once your servers are built, you're all ready to document and keep track of the steps that it takes to get this done.
00:53
On go-live day, verify that your SQL and Windows version installed on the new server will support the version of Vault that you're going to.
01:02
And then ensure that the server meets the minimum hardware and software requirements.
01:07
You will need the impersonation account and the SA account.
01:10
And if your organization doesn't use the SA account,
01:14
you will need an account that does have sysadmin rights in SQL Server and the password.
01:19
Make sure you've downloaded both the software and the patches,
01:22
and then that you know your serial number, product key, network license server name, the mode.
01:29
From there, you're going to build the new server using the correct version of SQL and Windows.
01:34
If your SQL and ADMS console are going to be on separate servers,
01:39
you will need some additional information that you might want to gather from production,
01:42
such as the shared folder and the permissions on the shared folder.
01:45
The resources PDF includes some information and instructions on installing SQL Server for Autodesk Vault and preconfiguring IIS.
01:53
If your SQL Server is not already installed, the installation of Vault will install SQL Express,
01:60
so you want to make sure that you have a SQL Server setup somewhere.
02:03
In this case, if a rollback is required, it is quite simple.
02:07
You are able to use the existing server because you've gone to a new server,
02:11
and the old server will be in place and nothing will have changed.
02:15
So should it not function, you can continue using the old server.
02:18
You would do the same thing for test.
02:20
You can continue using the old server.
02:22
You can go through this process as many times as you like.
02:25
And you would just restore the backup again each time you want to test.
02:30
So you're moving to a new server.
02:31
The first thing you're going to want to do is choose your upgrade window.
02:34
And if you're working with an Autodesk representative, let them know when you are planning this.
02:39
You're going to build your new servers, install Vault, and apply all Hotfixes.
02:44
Then you want to make sure that the users are logged out of the current production Vault.
02:49
And I would suggest doing an IISRESET from the command line to make sure that nothing is connected.
02:54
You're going to backup your current Vault. And then you are going to start the ADMS Console on the new Vault.
03:01
It's going to ask you if you want to create a new master database.
03:05
Choose "No."
03:06
And then go to the Tools and Restore, and restore the backup that you took from your production Vault.
03:13
Then once that's completed, you should be asked if you want to migrate your Vaults.
03:17
Select "Yes."
03:19
And if this step doesn't start automatically, you may need to do a manual B2B migration.
03:23
Instructions for that are included in the resources PDF. Once everything is complete, you're ready to install your clients.
03:30
However, your existing clients will work as long as they are within 2 versions while you are performing the upgrade.
03:35
But please note that any enhancements that were made at the client level will not be available until the client has upgraded.
03:42
Things to note when going to a new server.
03:44
Using this method, once you've tested the process and migration on go-live day, you simply need to ensure that users are not in Vault,
03:50
perform a new backup, and restore to the new server.
03:54
You will not be able to restore if your SQL Server and/or Vault are not the same or higher version,
03:60
and you cannot move more than two for Vault.
04:02
And then make sure that your users are out of Vault from the point where you are going to backup the production server,
04:08
to the point where you are going to go-live.
