Upgrading More Than Two Versions Single Site Environment

00:00

[MUSIC PLAYING]

00:05

As mentioned in the intro, if you are doing more than two versions at a time,

00:08

you can only step through two at a time in Vault. It is still recommended that you create a test server.

00:15

And in order to create a test server,

00:16

you would build a server as close to the production server as possible,

00:21

with the same version and patch level as your existing Vault server.

00:25

You would backup from production and restore to test server.

00:28

And at that point, you are ready to start all the testing.

00:31

You can perform the same steps that you would as part of the upgrade.

00:34

And you can see timing, and any errors, and any issues, and document anything that comes up.

00:41

On go-live day, you want to make sure that you document the current version in case you have to roll back.

00:48

You want to ensure that the current server meets the minimum hardware and software requirements for both production and test.

00:57

There's a PDF that has some resources for you, and that will include links to some of this information.

01:04

Again, pay attention to the usable SQL and Windows version, as you may need to upgrade these along the way.

01:13

You will need to have the impersonation account and the SA account.

01:17

And if your organization doesn't allow the SA account to be used,

01:20

you will need an account that has been set up as a sysadmin and have its password.

01:25

You will want to have all the software and the patches downloaded.

01:28

These are accessible on accounts.autodesk.com.

01:32

And then you need to know the serial number, the product key,

01:36

what your license server model is, the name of the license server.

01:40

Once you've done this, if you go live and something's not working,

01:44

or if something does not function during the upgrade and you need to roll back,

01:48

you would install the version that you documented in the previous section, and then you set up the same patch level,

01:55

restore your backup.

01:57

At that point, you are ready to use the old server.

02:01

If everything is working and you're going forward, you can take a backup and go forward.

02:06

Once you want to make sure that your users are logged off to take the backup, and then you want

02:12

to do it at the very beginning of the upgrade, and you want to make sure that nobody uses the system until you're done.

02:17

So when performing an in-place upgrade and you're needing to move more than two versions ahead,

02:23

you would choose your upgrade window.

02:25

If working with an Autodesk representative, let them know your planned upgrade window,

02:29

so they can prepare for any questions that might come up.

02:32

Have all your users log out of the system and do an IISRESET.

02:36

This will make sure that nothing is connected to Vault.

02:39

And you would do that from the command line of the ADMS console.

02:42

Then you would want to backup your current Vault. You would run the Vault installation software.

02:47

There's, again, a link in the PDF.

02:50

And then apply hotfixes.

02:51

Once the upgrade is complete, you're going to start your ADMS console,

02:55

and then you should be asked if you want to migrate your Vaults.

02:58

You need to select "Yes."

02:60

And if this step doesn't start automatically, you may need to do a B2B migration.

03:05

And for more information on the B2B migration, see the resources PDF.

03:09

When you are moving more than two versions, for example, if you are moving from 2018 to 2022,

03:16

you would have followed the step to go to 2020, and then you are going to go back to the install,

03:25

and you're going to install the next release of Vault up to two releases forward.

03:29

So at this point you could install 2022.

03:32

You would apply the hotfixes, you would start your console, and then you would migrate your databases.

03:37

Those steps will be repeated until you're at the version you want to be,

03:41

and then when you're all set you want to back it up in the final working state, and you're ready to install your clients.

03:46

In this case, you will need to install new clients,

03:49

as you've moved more than two versions and your existing clients will not be able to connect to your existing Vault server.

03:55

Things to be aware of: If you're migrating in-place more than two versions,

03:59

you may have to upgrade SQL or Windows along the way.

04:03

If you run the pre-checks individually, you may get an error.

04:08

When Vault upgrades, it does an uninstall and reinstall.

04:11

And then during the pre-checks, it looks for some Autodesk DM directories.

04:15

And if they exist, you'll get an error.

04:17

If you want to run the pre-checks and just make sure there's no other errors,

04:21

just know that that error may show up during a pre-check, but will not show up during the installation.

04:27

The impersonation account may revert back to the Autodesk Vault account.

04:31

The install is only able to create an account on the local machine,

04:34

and unless the local machine is your domain server, it will create it local.

04:39

And then once you start your Vault, you will just need to go into the ADMS console and reset the impersonation account.
