Describe the basic components of a network.
In InfoWorks ICM, a network contains all the information needed to describe a drainage system, including the physical structures on the network (manholes, pumps, etc.); the pipes and channels; and the subcatchment areas. The network includes a complete definition of each of these elements, including their physical location and the data needed for modelling. Using this data, ICM builds up a map-based display of the network and allows simulations of the network to be run under a variety of conditions.
Data in ICM is organized into manageable units. The top level of the database is either a group or a model group. Within a model group, a new InfoWorks network can be created at any time, and within that network, network objects can be created. Objects that make up the network model can then be added by digitizing on the GeoPlan Window or by importing data from another source. A new network can also inherit network objects from a template network.
Network objects typically fall into the following categories:
All systems can be modeled in one network.
When a network is opened, the map-based GeoPlan display appears. The GeoPlan shows a geographical representation of the network, alongside background layers and mapping.
Use the GeoPlan to inspect any part of the network, edit network objects, and view simulation results.
There will be many versions of each network, as it evolves over time. Any version of a network can be viewed and edited, and changes that are made can be monitored using the InfoWorks ICM Version Control facilities.
Be aware that there are two types of networks available in ICM: InfoWorks native and SWMM. These tutorials cover the use of the InfoWorks network.
