Auto-number sheets in Civil 3D

Automatically apply numbering to sheets in a Civil 3D sheet set stored in Autodesk Construction Cloud.

00:03

In this session, we'll learn how to auto-number the sheets in a sheet set.

00:07

Before I get started, let me mention that as of the time of this recording, January 2025,

00:12

the Auto-number feature is only available for sheet sets stored in the Autodesk Construction Cloud.

00:17

I'm not sure if this will change over time, but for now this is a cloud only feature.

00:22

On my screen I have a small sheet set containing about 14 sheets.

00:26

You can see that the sheet set includes a pair of subsets, one for plan and profile sheets and one for cross sections.

00:33

Historically, you could renumber sheets by right clicking on a sheet and choosing rename and renumber.

00:39

And you could still do this, it works the same way.

00:42

I'll make this first sheet 10 for example, and then I'll click Next and I'll enter 11 for the next sheet and so on.

00:49

I'll click OK when finished.

00:51

So this more traditional workflow also applies to the cloud.

00:54

That said, here in the cloud we have the ability to apply sheet numbers automatically.

00:59

I'll do that by right clicking on the sheet set or one of the subsets.

01:04

As an example, I'll right click on the cross sections subset and choose auto numbering.

01:09

From here I can assign a prefix.

01:11

This might be A for architectural or C for civil, something like that.

01:15

I don't need a prefix in this case, so I'll leave this setting blank.

01:18

I can then enter the starting number for this subset.

01:21

For instance, I'll type 1 and press OK.

01:24

When I do, you can see that all the sheets within that subset are numbered starting with 1.

01:29

Knowing this, if I wanted to renumber the entire sheet set starting at one, I would right click on the sheet set and choose Auto Numbering.

01:37

I'll use one for the starting number and I'll press OK.

01:40

Notice that applying Auto Numbering to the sheet set, it numbers everything outside the subsets.

01:46

Knowing that, I'll right click on the Planning Profiles subset and choose Auto-Numbering.

01:50

This group of sheets will start with three and I'll click OK.

01:54

Finally, I'll right click and renumber the cross sections subset starting with six.

01:59

And the last thing, I'll right click on this final sheet and assign it #14 using the traditional rename renumber workflow.

02:06

As you can see using the auto numbering feature, renumbering sheets is no longer a one at a time process.

02:12

Today, so long as the sheet set is stored in the cloud, an entire sheet set can be renumbered with a few clicks of the mouse.
