Creating MEP systems

Creating duct and piping systems in Revit - Exercise

Task 1: Create a duct system

  1. Open the practice file 001-Small Medical Center-Create Systems.rvt. It opens in the 01 Ground Floor HVAC Plan.
  2. In the Project Browser, expand Families and select Duct Systems>Duct System>Supply Air.
  3. Right-click and select Duplicate.
  4. Double-click slowly on the new Supply Air system name and rename it High Pressure Supply Air.
  5. In the View, hover over one of the blue supply air systems and press <Tab> until the system is selected, as shown below. Click on it to select it.

  6. In the Type Selector, change the type to Duct Systems>High Pressure Supply Air.
  7. Try the same thing with a return air system. You won’t be able to change the type because there is only one return air system created in this project.
  8. In the Project Browser, right-click on the new High Pressure Supply Air system and select Type
    Properties….
  9. In the Type Properties dialog box, review the parameters you can modify. Change the Graphic Override for the system to red and click OK.
  10. When you return to the view, you can see that the color of the system changes, as shown below.

  11. Save the project.

Task 2: Create a piping system

  1. Open the 01 Ground Floor HVAC Piping view. The view shows only piping for refrigerant lines.
  2. Select some of the piping in the model and review the System Type and System Name in Properties, as shown below.

  3. In the Project Browser, expand Families>Piping Systems>Piping System and review the types available. None of them are related to piping. In this case, you need to use the Other system as the basis for your new systems.
  4. Duplicate the Other system twice. Name one Gas Refrigerant Piping and the other Liquid Refrigerant Piping.
  5. Select the Gas Refrigerant Piping system type and set the Graphic Override color to Purple and,
in the Identity Data area type in the Abbreviation GAS, as shown below. This abbreviation will be used when you create new piping based on this system type.

  6. Repeat the process with the Liquid Refrigerant Piping system type and set the color to Orange and the Abbreviation to LQD.
  7. Assign the new system types to some of the existing Gas and Liquid Refrigerant piping systems in the project, as shown below.

  8. Save the project.
