The Alias workspace

00:02

This is the default Alias workspace.

00:05

Up at the top, we've got a fairly standard menu bar

00:08

and here on Preferences, for example, you can choose your screen colors.

00:12

So you might prefer a dark gray or a dark blue.

00:17

I'm going to start by doing a File > Open

00:19

and bring in a model,

00:21

and I've got an empty model stage already

00:24

so I'm gonna say delete that and open my new one.

00:27

And if this construction options question pops up,

00:30

it's not really important until you start doing some serious modeling.

00:33

So I'm just going to take the default answer which is highlighted in blue.

00:38

Over here with Diagnostic Shade, I can give the model a block color

00:42

Or do some surface analysis

00:45

Or I can use one of these viz shaders to show the materials on the model.

00:50

Above that there's a small customizable tool shelf.

00:54

So for example, I use the Information Window a lot,

00:57

I can drag that onto the shelf with the middle mouse button,

00:60

so I've always got it at hand.

01:02

And at the top in the Control Panel,

01:04

you can manage the structure and the display of your geometry,

01:08

and you have the option to open sections as fly-outs using the right mouse button.

01:14

And these three are just a docked group of tools that I can resize or minimize.

01:21

So over here in the main model window,

01:23

I can zoom in and out using the scroll button on the mouse.

01:27

And if I come up here and click and drag on this ViewCube, I can tumble the view

01:32

and use these view tools.

01:35

And then on the view window title bar,

01:36

I've got this Show menu that I can use to turn off the grid for example.

01:42

And then over here is our main Tool Palette,

01:45

and I can display these tabs as lists or as icons

01:50

and I can change the orientation of the palette,

01:53

and again use the right mouse button for fly-out menus

01:57

and I can choose to keep it floating or dock it

02:00

to any of the borders using the middle mouse button.

02:05

And when I use a palette tool like Revolve here,

02:08

it shows up in this current tool icon

02:10

and instructions for what to do next are given in this prompt line area.

02:15

And below that, we have the layer shortcut bar

02:18

and I can use this to organize the model and turn on and off some geometry layers.

02:25

So this whole layout with any changes or customizations you make

02:29

is saved in this Default Workspace shown down here on the Workspaces bar.

02:35

And optionally you can create additional or alternative

02:37

Workspaces which are simply different tool layouts.

02:41

So on startup, you're given these three as examples to take a look at.
