Docs part 2 | Evaluate a 3D model and sheets

Use Autodesk Docs to view 2D PDFs and 3D model files to perform quantity takeoffs.

Learning objectives: 

  • Query the Revit model for object categories in the Model Browser.
  • Work with a 2D PDF sheet set. If you are in an instructor-led class, your teacher has already uploaded it for you. 
  • Identify a room in the plan drawing and measure the area of a room using the measurement tool.

 

Open project file

  1. Account sign in: Sign in to the Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  2. Access folder: In Docs, open Files > Project Files > Class Project folder.
  3. Open file: Open file named: Revit 2025_Small Bldg_All disciplines.rvt. Make sure you are viewing Version 2.

 

Exercise questions

After opening the Revit file, provide answers to the questions below.

  1. View and evaluate the 3D model view in the Model Browser: Select a Revit object category to work with (such as doors or windows) and provide the following properties about the Revit object. 
    • What is the name of the Revit object category that you selected to work on (ex., doors or windows)?_________________________
    • How many unique Revit types are shown within that category? _________________________________________
    • List two or three names of the Revit styles within that category. _________________________________________
    • List two or three of the common properties for a given Revit style for all instances of that object. _________________________________________ 
    • List two or three of the instance-based properties for a given Revit style of that object. _________________________________________
  1. Close viewer window: Click X in the top right of the screen to exit the viewer window and return to the Files view.
  2. Determine a room area from a sheet: Open the Sheet 102-Second Floor Plan document. What is the approximate area of Office Room 26 (Figure 11, mark 1)?

    Answer:_______________square feet or_______________square meters.

Hint: Click Sheets & Views, then open Sheets: 102 – Second Floor Plan. Use the area tool from measurement tool in the markup toolbar. If the area tool is not actionable, you will need to calibrate the sheet first.
