Step-by-step guide

ICM models culverts as a sequence of culvert inlet, conduit, and culvert outlet. In previous ICM versions, this was done using three links. From 2023.1, it is simplified with a culvert conduit type.

To complete this exercise, open the transportable database .icmt file for this tutorial or continue from the previous lesson.

  1. From the Explorer, under Database, double-click the 1D River Model to open it on the GeoPlan.

In the InfoWorks ICM interface, 1D River Model is highlighted in the Database and open on the GeoPlan.

Click Find in GeoPlan.

  1. Perform a Quick Find for Culv_In.

In the Quick Find dialog box, Culv_In is entered in the Name field.

  1. Once the culvert is located, Close the Quick Find window.
  2. On the GeoPlan, zoom out until both Culv_In and the Culv_Out outfall node are in view.
  3. From the GeoPlan Tools toolbar, expand the New Object Type combo box and select Link.

From the GeoPlan Tools toolbar, the New Object Type drop-down is expanded, and Link is selected.

  1. On the GeoPlan, draw a new link line between Culv_In and Culv_Out.
  2. In the Create New Link popup, set the Type to Conduit.
  3. Click OK.

In the GeoPlan, the new link line displays, and in the Create New Link popup, the Type field is set to Conduit, and OK is selected.

  1. In the Conduit inlet Properties window, set the Conduit type to Culvert.
  2. Set the Shape ID to ARCHSPRUNG.
  3. Set the Width to 11400.
  4. Set the Height to 3000.
  5. Set the Springing height to 500.
  6. Set the Bottom roughness to 50.000.
  7. Set the Top roughness to 50.000.
  8. Set the US invert level to 32.040.
  9. Set the DS invert level to 31.880.
  10. Set the Culvert code to 9.
  11. Set the Reverse flow model to Nominal.

p>In the Properties window for the Conduit inlet, all parameters are set for this exercise.

This conduit has been defined as ARCHSPRUNG. To view this shape:

  1. Expand the Shape ID drop-down.
  2. Select Open Shape ARCHSPRUNG.

In the Properties window, the Shape ID drop-down is expanded, and Open Shape ARCHSPRING is selected.

  1. In the Geometry field, click the ellipsis () button to view the opening.

In the Properties window, in the Shape properties section, the Geometry field is highlighted in red; and in the Shape window, an image shows the shape of the opening.

  1. Click Cancel to close the Shape window.
  2. To save changes, validate and commit the network.

There should be no validation errors and two warnings.
