A small group of not-so-small airports have seized positions of leadership in the aviation industry as adopters of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and integration with geographic information system (GIS) and asset management. As part of that position of leadership, they’ve also taken on the roles of mentors and teachers for other airports, sharing their victories, their failings, and their lessons learned. We will discuss what these airports are doing to lead the way and what other airports are doing as they surge to catch up.

You may have heard that an airport is like a small city. Implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) at this scale can quickly get complicated; what's possible and what's practical don't necessarily align. In this class we'll look at some special considerations for airports, ways in which to scope an implementation, and ways in which to use Autodesk, Inc., software systems (such as InfraWorks software, Revit software, and AutoCAD Civil 3D software). We'll also take a look at effective practices, and we'll discuss lessons learned from some specific large-scale BIM programs involving airports.

Flying a drone around an airport comes with a unique set of challenges. In this class, Atkins and 3DR will walk you through how we were able to obtain the first FAA waiver to fly inside protected airspace, and what kinds of hoops we had to jump through to convince the busiest airport in the world that this was an innovative technology worth pursuing. We'll walk through the process of obtaining the waiver and capturing the data, and review what we've done with the captured images and the models we've built for design.

The challenges for an owner-operator of one of the world's busiest airports are tremendous, involving multiple disciplines, sectors, and business functions. This class looks at the solutions, products, and workflows delivered in key areas—including aircraft tracking, stands management, a works approval interface, asset management integration, and supply chain model management—during a recent engagement at Heathrow Airport, London. We demonstrate how the solution, which was designed for mobile devices including Apple® iPads®, allows Heathrow access to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other key business data in the field. It also links the aircraft and stands status to infrastructure and asset information from IBM® Maximo® and a works approval solution. From incident handling and airline management to regulatory reports and business workflows, we show how the complexities of managing airport systems can be as demanding as a running a mini-city.

Undertaking the monumental effort of organizing data within an organization is difficult alone. Add standardization and, ultimately, the development of specifications to provide guidance to all who do business with your organization, and you really have a mountain to climb. Airports have unique requirements that set them apart from other asset management systems. During this panel discussion, we’ll share the obstacles encountered from the conception of an asset management program all the way through to an enterprise-level BIM (Building Information Modeling), geographic information system (GIS), and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). We’ll share experiences on how these obstacles were handled both temporarily and permanently to achieve steps toward a single source of truth. Panel members will offer their unique perspectives on the various issues confronted through the implementation of these programs.

Airport design necessitates collaboration between numerous teams with a wide range of skill sets generally coming from various locations. This requires well-established strategies and methodical use of tools and technologies for a successful delivery of a large-scale project. This session will present strategies for utilizing cloud collaboration tools such as Collaboration for Revit, BIM 360 Team and Fusion Team (formerly A360 Team), BIM 360 Glue software, and BIM 360 Docs software in order to help teams communicate and collaborate effectively in delivering a complex project. We will showcase San Francisco's $2.4 billion International Airport project as an example of utilizing these strategies to enable effective collaboration between more than 200 architects, engineers, and builders from Woods Bagot, HKS Architects, Gensler, and numerous core trades and consultants on this design-build project. This session will present Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategies for cloud collaboration and data management on airport projects.

In the summer of 2020, as the world struggled through the COVID-19 pandemic, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) selected an international team to design Noida International Airport (NIA) in Delhi. The Delhi National Capital Region aims to serve 200 million passengers by the year 2060. The architectural team consists of Nordic, Grimshaw, Haptic, and STUP, and represents offices across the globe—Norway, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It became clear that the only way to work together, even without a pandemic, would be to the most-advanced cloud services—BIM 360 software. Maximizing a combination of BIM 360 Docs, BIM 360 Design, and BIM 360 Collaboration software, the team has designed the most-optimal workflows to suit the project. As the team members proceed with the four-phased architectural design from their home offices, this demo aims to present the routines we used, the collaboration processes we introduced and discovered, and the ways we brought together an international team to create sustainable world-class architecture.

This class will illustrate the storytelling process undertaken for a recent international airport design competition in Dalian, China, and the critical role storytelling played in the firm’s competition submittal. The class will demonstrate how a variety of media was used to create an inspiring video that set the firm’s submittal apart from its competition. We will explore each phase of the project, starting with discovery and storyboards. Then we will move into a discussion of production for both live and CG elements, and we’ll end with compositing and editing. We will explain why key decisions were made and when they were made to get the best results. The audience will gain an understanding for each part of the process by seeing real-world examples and behind-the-scenes footage during each phase. Finally, we will share successes and lessons learned from our experience working with 2 Design and Production Teams that were on opposite sides of the world and 14 hours apart.

On April 27, 2017, the new extension for Oslo Gardermoen Airport in Norway opened its doors, increasing its capacity from 19 million passengers to 30 million. The project was delivered on time and on budget, with practically no errors during design or construction. The terminal has received a BREEAM Excellent certification, using many innovative solutions, making it the world's greenest airport. While we are waiting for electric airplanes, we'll show how the terminal building is ready for the future, drastically reducing energy consumption. The class will also focus on how we managed to pull off this massive project through the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM). What were the key factors in the project's success? We'll discuss project organization and communication through visualization, BIM quality assessment through new tools and workflows developed for Revit software, and how Navisworks software helped us combine what may very well be the world's largest BIM model.

Learn how Autodesk Vehicle Tracking can be used in the preliminary design phase of an airport project. Create and then model the movements of both aircraft and ground support vehicles including push-back manoeuvers. But why stop there? It can also be used to model the movements of vehicles inside airport buildings and help to optimize the design and increase safety. Airport projects don’t fit into the typical AutoCAD Civil 3D software corridor workflows. And yet airfield designers require Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows just as much as, if not more than, conventional road designers. The challenge is in utilizing creative and sometimes unconventional corridor modeling methods, as well as configuring AutoCAD Civil 3D software appropriately.
