As the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry continues to rely on its current design process, technology allows for the exploration of possibilities that may differ from the current workflow. The AEC industry has been using the same methodology for decades—since long before we even had computers. This discussion poses the question: Shouldn’t we look at a holistic change of that methodology, taking into consideration future technological advances? This session will offer a forum to discuss various hypothetical possibilities regarding the architectural design process and its interaction with technology, hoping to objectively look at areas that can be improved. During this roundtable, we’ll share and discuss experiences, successes, failures, and “wish lists,” and have an open discussion so we can all learn from each other. Every company has its own way to proceed in the design process, but even with the vast number of possible design solutions for buildings, shouldn’t the process be one that can maximize technology to its advantage?

Building information modeling (BIM) platforms and design software have opposite strengths. To get the best from each, it's beneficial to have them working in combination and complementing each other throughout the whole design phase. Doing so will also help bring BIM culture closer to designers, breaking the entrenched silos between the disciplines. Embracing designers in BIM allows for earlier implementation in the project and delays design freeze, as every iteration is captured in the federated model. This workflow proposes a fully integrated approach to the use of Rhino software and Revit software, describing the interoperability requirements of these platforms at the different stages of a project. Interoperability is a big challenge—we will review how an agile methodology can let you incorporate emerging technologies, and how this technology affects the design process.

Last year, we introduced the idea of outcome-based design in the Autodesk University course, “The Business Value of Computational and Generative Design for Executives.” This year, we are pushing further to develop actionable plans for implementation by design technologists and computational and generative designers. Revit®-based software is recognized as a building design tool for architectural, structural, plumbing and HVAC. At Whitman, Requardt & Associates, our water and wastewater engineers and designers saw the benefits others were experiencing by using Revit and decided to take Revit to the next level—for use designing large-diameter pipe used in water and wastewater process plants. With only AutoCAD® software 2D experience, the switch to Revit identified changes that were needed within our design process and workflow. These changes ultimately led to a better coordinated design for our clients, and Revit is now the tool of choice for many water and wastewater projects. In this class, I demonstrate how engineers and designers in the water and wastewater disciplines at Whitman, Requardt & Associates made use of Revit for more than plumbing.

3D printing adds an incredibly powerful tool to the design process. As the industry moves beyond 3D-printed Yoda heads and Pokémon, we unlock even more-dramatic efficiencies and advantages for developers. In this talk, we'll look at how pairing parametric modeling with 3D printing enables users to iterate faster than ever before and build fully functional prototypes. Lastly, we'll explore how 3D printing's "slicer" software is quietly one of the biggest drivers of the technology.

Using our Autodesk suite to reshape our design process and owning our IP has enabled sustainable scaling and the delivery of large pipelines of work for central government using off-site construction methods. This success has led to a 300% increase in our manufacturing capacity in the last three years, while maintaining client satisfaction with the quality of our design and project delivery. We'll explain how this has been achieved through repeatable and continuously improved designs, supported by Autodesk Build and Autodesk Docs software. In the second half of this talk, the focus will shift toward the potential of Autodesk Informed Design software and how it can facilitate a platform design through the development of subassemblies, ultimately supporting off-site construction by maximizing productivity and improving quality through increased industrialization.

The class will guide attendees to understand the principles and aim of the Conceptual Design Process developed for White Architects, and the benefits that Autodesk technology and services can bring.

White Architects needed to identify design intent in conceptual architecture stages, including energy efficiency. They wanted to use Autodesk applications to efficiently identify the design intent and, at the same time, to be able to re-use the digital models in later design processes.

Autodesk has worked with them to define the best processes and tools to achieve their objectives, defining a consistent framework that allows White architects to use the framework as a fluid and flexible tool for facing this early stage design and to use the digital models downstream to accomplish with more advanced phases of the project lifecycle.

Come and see how the new virtual technologies influence the Porsche design process. We'll cover the choice of using virtual decision making instead of physical prototypes; the challenges and Autodesk solutions to simulate and visualize new user experiences in new-car projects; common technology process approaches-from CAD (Alias software) to visual simulation to Class A; and the use of new visual simulation approaches to take real decisions day by day (measured materials, light design, car user experience, driving performance, press usage, exhibition, and marketing support). We'll also cover using OGL and GI Raytracing in the process with a single virtual data model; and using new immersive tools to improve and speed up the design process (like head-mounted displays, virtual reality, augmented reality, and virtual sketching and modeling).

The traditional approach to vehicle design in industry departs from a defined technical package and research about vehicle users, brand character, and aesthetics. This process has responded to stable vehicle configurations for decades, enabling creative design to focus significantly on visual and tactile aesthetics. But future megatrends are disrupting this outlook. This new state of the art widens the influence of design, requires new types of creatives, and demands new, more effective creative design workflows. The Transportation Design program at the University of Cincinnati has tackled these challenges by creating the Future Mobility Center, a vision of future-vehicle creative design spaces, with virtual reality applications from early creative development to final design validation, in tandem with rapid physical validation. This Autodesk University class will describe how the space was developed, and will provide examples of projects that have come out of it.

User-centered interface design increasingly gains importance in modern mobility design to provide sophisticated experiences for the customer. In this session, we'll showcase how a web application, built on top of Autodesk Platform Services and our local database, can optimize the design process, improve CO2e footprint assessment, and enhance collaboration among clients and stakeholders. Revit software is recognized as a building design tool for architectural, structural, plumbing, and HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning). At Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP (WR&A), the Water Wastewater discipline saw the benefits that others were experiencing using Revit software and decided to take Revit software to the next level for use with large diameter pipe used in process plants. With only AutoCAD software 2D experience, the switch to Revit software identified changes needed within the design process and workflow. These changes ultimately led to a better-coordinated design for clients, and Revit software is now the tool of choice for many Water Wastewater projects. This session will demonstrate how WR&A's Water Wastewater disciplines utilized Revit software for more than plumbing.

Autodesk Navisworks software isn't just for contractors. Architects are seeing the value of using Navisworks during design as a coordination tool. Get a firsthand look from an architect and Building Information Modeling (BIM) service provider on how to use Navisworks for phasing studies and learn the value of using Navisworks early in the design process for owners and architects. We will show a case study from Florida on how local governments used the design model for tenant phasing, and site logistics in design. We will describe how architects use clash detection for design coordination, discuss what not to model, and explain the difference between what is modeled in design versus construction for coordination. We will give best practices and tips and tricks on how to make Navisworks work for you.

In this class, a CIO of a leading ship-building company from India shall be jointly presenting with a partner a case study of their custom implementation of Vault software as a business process automation platform to synchronize their design and business workflows to their Enterprise Business systems—Infor ERP. The class will explore how various departments of a ship-manufacturing organization works around the design data that flows between various users and integrates critical items and BOM with their ERP system and automates several business workflows customized on Vault interface. The presenter will explain how they could save close to 20% of their design-to-manufacturing cycle time by streamlining Vault product data management (PDM) software to remove redundant work on ERP while enabling a collaborative and automated business environment. This class will explore the extent to which Vault can be customized beyond its basic features, and throw light on integration of BOM and related data to ERP or other applications.

Traditionally CAD and CAE have mostly been used for documenting designs and providing feedback on how they perform in operation. Improved tools, expanded computing power, and new manufacturing technology are now opening up new possibilities for computational design and engineering, where CAD and CAE are used to actually generate part geometry directly. These tools help engineers explore an array of design strategies and create lighter, stronger, or more-efficient parts by driving the design with functional goals, not just a handful of dimensions on a sketch. This course will provide some context for optimization tools as they exist today and introduce several new tools aimed at this goal-driven design concept.

Generative design is often seen as a new design methodology. However, the key principles of the process mirror the fundamentals of design. In this class, we'll present a case study of how generative design is being used at University College London (UCL) to reinforce the core design curriculum through industrially relevant technology. During this class, you'll gain an understanding of the generative design process, see how you can apply it in an educational setting, and evaluate its use through a real-world example. We'll explore how we can use generative design for multiobjective optimization, and how this can be turned into a hands-on graded assignment that forces students to consider real-world requirements. This will include evaluations of student submissions and analysis of how effective this assignment was at teaching the principles of design, as well as course materials for you to take away and use while running similar teaching exercises.
