Modify Cable Tray Fittings in Tight Spaces (4:03 min)

WOMAN: Modifying Cable Tray Fittings in Tight Spaces.

00:05

In this video, we're going to modify cable tray and fittings

00:08

so that it will not interfere with some duct work.

00:13

I'm working in the small Medical Center building in the 01

00:16

Ground Floor Electrical Plan view.

00:19

I have some cable tray running above the exam rooms

00:23

and I want to make sure there aren't any conflicts

00:26

with other disciplines.

00:29

I'm going to open the section that's displaying right here.

00:32

And then I can see when I come in here, here's my cable tray

00:35

and it is interfering with some duct work that's nearby there.

00:40

So I need to create a way to have the cable tray go over

00:45

the ductwork.

00:46

To start of, I'm going to split.

00:49

So I'm going into the Modify tab Split Element, clicking that.

00:54

I'm going to make sure that Delete Inner

00:56

Segment is selected, because I don't want the inner segment.

00:60

And I'm going to pick two points along the cable tray

01:03

and click Modify.

01:05

You'll see that there are some little fittings that

01:07

were added.

01:08

So I don't want those, I'm going to delete them now.

01:13

Next, I'm going to draw a cable tray.

01:15

I'm going to select it, right click on that,

01:18

end there, and select Draw Cable Tray.

01:23

I'm going to draw it up and over at a 45 degree angle.

01:29

But you can see that I can't continue drawing it.

01:32

And what's happening here is the fitting

01:35

is not allowing me to connect, there's

01:38

not enough room for a fitting.

01:41

So if I hit Escape and then select this fitting here

01:44

that was put in, you can see that the bend radius

01:47

is set to 12 inches.

01:49

And that's just too big of a bend radius for this area.

01:52

I'm going to undo and start this again, right

01:56

click Draw Cable Tray but this time I'm going to change

02:00

my bend radius to 6 inches.

02:03

So a smaller bend radius press Enter.

02:07

And now I'm going to draw at 45 degrees.

02:10

I'm also at this time I'm going to go ahead and just

02:12

make it a bit longer.

02:15

Take it up above the ceiling but it'll be OK

02:19

once we finish it all off.

02:20

So now I can draw my cable tray, I'll bring it in down and over,

02:25

over at 45 degrees.

02:30

So these look fine, these bends right here look fine.

02:33

This one I need to use Trim Extend by Corner.

02:38

So I'm going to come in here click Trim Extend,

02:41

click the two points and click Modify.

02:45

Now, when I Zoom in, you can see that this is actually

02:48

set to 12 inches the default and so I'm going to change that now

02:52

to 6 inches.

02:53

Now the next thing I'm going to do

02:55

is get this piece down below the ceiling.

02:58

And to do that I'm going to delete out these extra pieces

03:01

of cable tray.

03:03

And then use the drag command here and connect my cable tray

03:09

fittings.

03:10

So they're connected fitting to fitting.

03:13

It's still too close to the top of the structural elements.

03:17

So what I want to make sure that I do

03:20

is change it a little bit more.

03:22

So what I'm going to do is select all of the fittings.

03:25

So I'm going to grab these fittings,

03:27

hold down my Control key, add those fittings.

03:30

And now in the Options bar I'm going

03:33

to change the bend radius to 3.

03:36

So once again, I now drag the controls from one into another

03:41

and I have my cable tray that's running

03:44

above and over the ductwork.

03:47

So by connecting cable tray fitting to fitting

03:50

and modifying the bend radius of fittings,

03:52

you can use less space as you avoid interferences.
