The primary vertical component of any building is a structural column, which can be placed in a plan or a 3D view.
00:11
When placing columns in your building model, you can either place an individual column
00:16
or multiple columns at the grid intersections you choose.
00:19
On the Structure ribbon, in the Structure panel, click Column.
00:24
Expand the Type Selector to see the column types that are available in the project.
00:29
Take note that in Revit, structural columns are loadable families.
00:34
If needed, you can create different families and types for your project.
00:38
Here, select the type of column you want to place.
00:42
You can choose to place a Vertical Column or a Slanted Column.
00:46
Columns are placed at the current level and extend down to the Depth or Height you specify in the Options Bar.
00:52
For this example, select Height, and then set the level to Level 2.
00:58
A preview of the column appears under the cursor in the drawing area, and you can click to place the structural column.
01:05
If needed, press the SPACEBAR to rotate the column in 90-degree increments before you place it.
01:13
To set the number of degrees to rotate the column, before placing it, on the Options Bar, select Rotate after placement.
01:21
Then, when you click to place a column, Revit displays a rotation vector.
01:26
Once the orientation is correct, click to place the column.
01:30
To place multiple columns, with the tool still activated,
01:34
on the Place Structural Column contextual ribbon, in the Multiple panel, select At Grids.
01:40
This allows you to create multiple structural columns at intersections of the selected grid lines.
01:46
To see how this works, use a crossing window to select all of your grids.
01:51
A preview of the columns appears at the grid intersections.
01:55
If needed, press SHIFT and select a grid to remove it from the selection, or press CTRL to add a grid.
02:03
With all the grids selected, to rotate the columns in 90-degree increments before they are created, press SPACEBAR.
02:11
When everything looks right, click Finish to create the columns.
02:16
You now know how to place structural columns into your building engineering design.
