Creating and modifying an exterior elevation

Create and edit an exterior elevation.

00:03

An exterior elevation is a two D view showing the

00:07

external facade of the building from a specific direction.

00:11

They used to show the arrangement of the facade

00:14

and will often include levels and dimensions as well

00:16

as details of materials used in the facade.

00:20

We're currently looking at the exterior 3d view

00:23

and we need to create a new two D elevation of this side of the building.

00:29

First, I'll open the first floor plan from the project browser here

00:33

and we can see that we have three elevation markers for the north,

00:36

south and east side of the building

00:39

and looking in the project browser,

00:40

we can see those under the elevations group here.

00:45

I'll pick the east elevation marker here

00:49

and we can see that it can have four views associated to it.

00:52

Although this one only has one view, which is the east elevation.

00:57

If I select the pointer for the east elevation view,

00:60

we can see the location of the cut plan

01:02

and also details of the view in the properties palette.

01:06

So looking at the view,

01:07

we can see that we need to create the west elevation of the building.

01:11

So to do this we'll go to the view ribbon tab and from the create panel,

01:15

we'll click the elevation tool.

01:19

Now,

01:20

we can see the elevation marker is attached to the mouse. And

01:23

as we move around the building here,

01:25

we can see the pointer point towards the building.

01:29

So we just need to make sure that we're on the

01:30

left side of the building here and the point is pointing inwards

01:34

and then we can click to place the elevation marker

01:37

and then that elevation view will be created

01:40

and looking at the project browser, we can see elevation one A

01:44

which is the view that we've just created.

01:47

So I'll click, modify to finish placing elevations

01:50

and we'll rename this view

01:53

in the project browser. We'll right click over

01:55

and choose a rename

01:57

and now we'll call this West.

02:02

So now we have the West elevation created.

02:04

I'll open it up from the project browser

02:08

and first we can see that not all of the building is visible.

02:12

So we need to adjust the crop region.

02:14

So I'll select it

02:15

and then using the drag controls,

02:18

we'll stretch the top edge up. So that encompasses the whole of the building.

02:23

So it's just above the roof here.

02:26

Now, at the bottom, we've got a little bit too much of the site in the view here.

02:31

So let's use the drag control to bring that up closer to the ground floor level.

02:36

And I'll also just bring it in a little bit on the left hand side here.

02:40

And now we've finished adjusting the crop region.

02:43

We want to hide it in the view.

02:45

So to do this,

02:46

we'll go to the view control bar

02:49

and we have a toggle for the visibility of the crop region.

02:52

So we'll click on hide crop region

02:55

and then that will be switched off in the view,

02:58

looking at the elevation itself.

03:00

I can see that there's some objects missing that should

03:03

be displayed on the left side of the building here.

03:06

And this is due to the depth of the view and,

03:08

and that's controlled by the far clip offset

03:10

that we can see in the properties palette here

03:14

to show how this works better. We'll first go to the view ribbon tab

03:17

and from the windows panel,

03:18

we'll click tile views so we can see all of the views on screen at once.

03:24

Now, from the navigation bar here, I'll click zoom all to fit

03:27

so that all of the views zoom to fit the screen.

03:33

Now, looking at the plan here,

03:34

if I click on the pointer for the west elevation that we've just created,

03:38

we can see the blue dash line here which represents

03:41

the depth of the view on a far clip plane.

03:44

We can see it needs to go a little bit further into the building.

03:47

So it covers the balcony and the rooms around the front of the building here.

03:51

So we used to drag controls to drag this through.

03:54

And then when we let go in the elevation view, we can see those objects now appear.

03:60

So now that we have the depth of the elevation adjusted,

04:03

I'll close the first floor plan

04:05

and then the exterior 3d view,

04:08

then I'll click the Zoom al to fit once more. So that fills the screen.

04:13

Now, as this is going to be a technical drawing,

04:15

we want to hide the plant in and also the people that we can see on the balcony here.

04:22

So we'll go to the properties palette

04:25

and we'll click the edit button next to visibility

04:28

and graphics overrides so that we can make changes.

04:31

So here we can see we're currently looking at the model categories tab

04:36

and the first column here lists out all of the categories that we have

04:39

and there's a check box which if it's selected

04:43

means that that category is visible.

04:45

And if we unselected, then that category will be hidden.

04:49

And then we have further columns here that will allow us to

04:52

override for both the projection and cut views of the objects.

04:57

So first we need to find the planting category.

04:60

So from the search box up here, I'll type in planting

05:03

and then we can see we have that category filtered.

05:06

So I'll uncheck the visibility option here

05:09

and then I'll click apply

05:11

and we can see in the view behind us here that the planting has now been hidden.

05:16

Now, I'll go back to the search bar and we'll search for site

05:20

and then we'll uncheck the visibility of the site category again

05:24

and click apply.

05:25

We can see that they've now been hidden in the view.

05:27

So I'll click OK to close down the visibility graphic overrides.

05:32

Now, we also want to hide the level markers in the view.

05:35

And as an alternative way of doing this, I'll pick on one of them in the view

05:39

and then from the right click menu,

05:41

we'll choose, hide in view and then category

05:45

and all of those level markers will be switched off.

05:48

And this is just the equivalent to uncheck in the visible option

05:52

in the visibility graphics overrides.

An exterior elevation is a two D view showing the

00:11

They used to show the arrangement of the facade

00:20

We're currently looking at the exterior 3d view

00:29

First, I'll open the first floor plan from the project browser here

and we can see that it can have four views associated to it.

02:36

And I'll also just bring it in a little bit on the left hand side here.

02:40

And now we've finished adjusting the crop region.

02:43

We want to hide it in the view.

02:45

So to do this,

02:46

we'll go to the view control bar

02:49

and we have a toggle for the visibility of the crop region.

02:52

So we'll click on hide crop region

02:55

and then that will be switched off in the view,

02:58

looking at the elevation itself.

03:00

I can see that there's some objects missing that should

03:06

03:47

03:51

So we used to drag controls to drag this through.

03:54

And then when we let go in the elevation view, we can see those objects now appear.

03:60

So now that we have the depth of the elevation adjusted,

04:03

I'll close the first floor plan

04:05

and then the exterior 3d view,

04:08

then I'll click the Zoom al to fit once more. So that fills the screen.

04:13

Now, as this is going to be a technical drawing,

04:15

we want to hide the plant in and also the people that we can see on the balcony here.

04:22

So we'll go to the properties palette

04:25

04:31

04:45

04:49

And then we have further columns here that will allow us to

04:52
