Create a new roof type and assign new roof types to existing roof elements.

Step-by-step guide

Create a new roof type and assign new roof types to existing roof elements.

  1. Open the project RF_Arch_ Roof Types_RVT2021.rvt. It opens in the 3D view.
  2. Zoom in on the garage and corridor, and in the Visual Control Bar, change the Visual Style to Shaded.

  1. Select the main roof.
  2. In the Type Selector, select Basic Roof: Wood Rafter 8ʺ – Asphalt Shingle – Insulated.

In the view, the main roof selected, and in the Type Selector, a new roof type selected.

The roof updates.

  1. Select the garage roof.
  2. In Properties, click Edit Type.

  1. In the Type Properties dialog, click Duplicate and name it “Clay Tile”.
  2. Click OK.

  1. In the Parameters section, next to Structure, click Edit.
  2. In the Edit Assembly dialog, click Layer 2 and click Insert.

A new layer is added.

  1. In the Material column, click By Category and click the Browse () button.

  1. In the Materials Browser, type “maso” and select Masonry-Tile.

  1. In the Graphics tab, in the Surface Pattern > Foreground section, click in the Pattern field.
  2. In the Fill Patterns dialog, change the Pattern Type to Model and select Shake.
  3. Click OK.

  1. In the Shading section, click in the Color bar.
  2. In the Color dialog, select a red.
  3. Click OK twice.

In the Material Browser, all settings configured for this example and highlighted in red, with OK selected.

  1. In the Edit Assembly dialog, change the Thickness for the Masonry – Tile layer to 6".
  2. Change the Function of Layer 3 to Thermal/Air Layer [3].
  3. Change the material of the Thermal/Air Layer to Insulation / Thermal Barriers – Rigid Insulation with a Thickness of 2".

In the Layers group box, all settings configured for this example and highlighted in red, with OK selected.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Click OK twice to finish the new roof type, and the garage roof updates.

In 3D view, the updated garage roof.
