Project practice exercise

Create a fluid volume inside of a bottle using boundary fill.

After completing this practice exercise, you'll be able to:

  • Control body opacity.
  • Create an offset plane.
  • Use Boundary Fill.
  • Adjust appearances.

This is a practice exercise video solution

00:05

for this practice. We'll start with the supply dataset bottle sample dot F three D.

00:10

We want to create a fluid volume inside of the bottle and for this we're going

00:14

to expand our bodies folder and note that

00:16

this design already does contain a fluid volume.

00:19

Let's go ahead and hide that for now and let's

00:20

talk about how we can create it for ourselves.

00:23

First I want to select the bottle,

00:25

right click and go to a passage control and reduce this to 30%.

00:29

This will allow me to see inside the bottle to ensure

00:32

that we don't have any fluid volume in there yet.

00:35

Next,

00:35

we want to create an offset plane that will represent the top portion of our fluid

00:40

for this.

00:41

I'm going to offset it 100 and 20 millimeters,

00:43

which will be just above our handle and say, okay,

00:47

next we're going to go to create

00:49

and boundary fill.

00:50

Boundary fill allows us to select tools in this case, planes, surfaces or solids.

00:56

We want to select the plane as well as the bottle itself.

00:59

Next we need to select the cells and this can be a little

01:02

bit tricky because it's hard to tell which cell you need to select.

01:05

We want to select the bottom one in this case and you'll

01:08

notice that it's not actually allowing me to click that checkbox.

01:12

Want to rotate it around. Let's go to the front and see if we can select it from here.

01:16

Sometimes you just simply need to rotate the view

01:18

to be sure that you're selecting the right cell.

01:21

We're going to allow this to create a new body.

01:23

But we don't want to remove the tools because

01:25

we want to maintain the bottle in this design.

01:27

We'll say, okay, and now if we hide the bottle, you can see that we have a fluid volume.

01:32

The fluid volume can now be measured by right clicking

01:35

and going to the properties and checking its volume.

01:38

In this case we have about 2.5 L.

01:41

Next we want to adjust its appearance.

01:44

So I'm gonna get a on the keyboard and I'm going to navigate to my liquid section

01:48

and we can select water or we can go to another material such as plastic.

01:53

We can go down to translucent plastic or transparent plastic

01:57

depending on what the look is that you want.

01:59

And we can select another material.

02:02

In this case I'm going to select acrylic red and drag it onto this body.

02:06

Then I'm going to right click and edit this.

02:08

I want this to be more of a teal color. So I'm going to drag this over to teal

02:14

and we can make adjustments such as the refraction index if we want to drop this down

02:19

and we can go to the advanced section and adjust things like the opacity.

02:24

Notice that the index of refraction is at a right now

02:27

but we can use another option something such as alcohol.

02:35

Let's close the appearances dialogue as well and bring back our bottle.

02:39

So now we can see we were able to create our fluid and we can apply this

02:44

and a plane that we created.

02:47

Let's expand the construction, high plane three.

02:50

And then let's save our design before moving on.
