Customizing elevations

00:09

Similar to creating Plans, we need to create Elevations.

00:13

What's awesome about the BIM Revit approach is,

00:16

we don't need to toil with a bunch of convoluted layers just to change the visibility of a couple random 2D lines.

00:24

What I'd like to do here is create some elevations with graphics ranging from hidden line production to realistic.

00:31

So, I'm gonna jump into Revit.

00:33

Of course, I'm gonna open my model.

00:35

It's a local model, so I'm gonna click "OK". And I will override that copy.

00:41

Perfect. Go to your Presentation First Floor Plan in your project browser under Floor Plans.

00:49

I'm gonna zoom in here. I'm not sure what the exact name of this room is, so I'm just gonna tag this one room.

00:56

Click "Tag Room". Aha, it's the pharmacy. I'm gonna put my little tag right here.

01:05

Hit "ESC" a couple of times. Now I want to create some elevations of my pharmacy.

01:14

To do that, go to the "View" tab, go to "Elevation".

01:24

Elevation is Interior Elevation.

01:27

I'm not a huge fan of how that looks, so I'm going to click "Edit Type".

01:36

I'll click into where it says "1/2" Square". I'm gonna click this Browse button right here.

01:43

I don't like 1/2" Square. I'm gonna go 1/2" Circle. Elevation Marked Body Circle Filled Arrow.

01:51

Notice I can click the drop-down here and select whatever family is loaded into my project.

01:57

If you work at a firm with specific CAD standards, they'll have your firm's CAD standard elevation markers loaded in.

02:06

In this case, I'll just grab this one, though. Click “OK”. Oh, that looks so much better.

02:12

Now, notice that when we come near a wall, it will point itself to that wall, which is pretty cool. Let's just point it upward.

02:23

Now hit "ESC" a few times, select the arrow or what they call the Target. Click that.

02:32

I like that it stops it at the wall, but I do like to see sections through the wall.

02:37

So, I'm going to click on here, I'm just gonna drag this over,

02:40

so I can see the section of that wall essentially to the outside of the wall.

02:49

We might as well show this. It's looking all the way back.

02:55

It's not going to really change the view when we drag this one.

02:58

But by doing that, it's going to speed up the view a little bit within reason.

03:05

Let's drag this down till we hit the back of that wall.

03:11

Hit Escape a few times. Let's double click on it, open it up. Not a big fan of the scale.

03:18

Don't like all the levels that are in there. Let's increase our scale, instead of 3/16", let's go to 1/2" equals a foot.

03:26

The Structural model's kind of showing up. So, type VG for Visibility Graphics.

03:33

Go to Revit Links, uncheck Structural.

03:41

Click Apply, click "OK". I love Revit.

03:46

I had no idea the ground floor was so much higher than this level here. Pretty cool, huh.

03:52

Okay, so I'm gonna select Lower Level. I'm going to click Show Bubble here.

04:01

I'm gonna click this bubble. But first I'm going to click on 2D.

04:05

The reason I'm doing that is I don't want this to affect the level in any other view.

04:10

Once I click 2D and drag this over,

04:15

I know that it's only going to show up like this in this view.

04:20

I'm gonna drag these two over a little bit.

04:25

Now I'm going to select Lower Level again, and I'm going uncheck that.

04:32

Perfect. Let's set our Detail Level to Fine. I'm gonna select this wall and it's a basic wall.

04:42

So, whoever modeled that wall didn't put a lot of detail in it. But that's fine.

04:46

Notice that if we select our crop region, we can drag this up.

04:52

I like to do that just to make sure we can see that there's a ceiling in there,

04:56

and we can actually drag these over a little bit more just to make sure we can see everything.

05:01

Ah ha! That's why we can't see it. Let's grab this crap region and drag it down.

05:07

See if they put some kind of floor in there.

05:10

Okay, Kind of generic looking, but that's pretty cool.

05:15

Now, let's go back down to Presentation First Floor.

05:20

Notice that that says Elevation 1A. Not a fan.

05:24

So, let's go back to Elevation 1A and let's just rename this. So let's scroll down till we find View Name.

05:32

All caps, it's called FIRST FLOOR PHARMACY NORTH.

05:37

Now we can close out of this, and what I want to do is I want to make three more views.

05:43

Notice that when we select this round bubble,

05:46

we can turn on this one, we can turn on this elevation, we can turn on this elevation.

05:55

Perfect. Now I'm gonna open the West Elevation by double clicking here.

06:01

Let's rename this to FIRST FLOOR PHARMACY WEST.

06:10

I'm not going to change any settings here, though. I'm just gonna keep it like this.

06:14

Put that here, double click on this. This will be FIRST FLOOR PHARMACY SOUTH.

06:24

And let's go to our East. Call this FIRST FLOOR PHARMACY EAST, Apply.

06:35

Perfect. Now I want to go back to my FIRST FLOOR PHARMACY NORTH.

06:41

I can do that too by going down to Elevations, Interior Elevations and drilling into that. Perfect.

06:50

First Floor Pharmacy North. I want to change my Visual Style to Realistic.

07:05

I just want to turn my shadows on. It's kind of funky looking, but that's okay.

07:12

Now, if we go to South, we've got this view here. Since this is 1/2" equals a foot, let's set our Detail Level to Fine.

07:22

Let's grab our crop region, let's pull it over.

07:32

Let's pull it up and pull it down to see that funky floor.

07:38

Well, a little different. We can see our Structural model in here now.

07:44

In this view, I just want to turn off my levels in the Structural model. But I want to show the Structural foundation.

07:51

So, I'm gonna go toe Visibility Graphics by typing VG.

07:56

I'm gonna go to Revit Links, keep Structural on.

08:01

But I'm gonna go to Host View, in my Basics tab, I'm gonna click on Custom.

08:08

Now go to Annotation Categories. Instead of by Host View, we'll go Custom.

08:15

Let's go to Levels and turn those off.

08:22

So, there we go. That's how we make specific elevations with different levels of detail.

08:27

And also remember, this is Revit. When we alter elements in our model, these views are automatically updated.

Creating elevations

The great thing about Revit is the elevations are created when you model the plans…well mostly. If we model walls, doors, floors and windows, we are getting Revit ready to start creating elevation views.

To create an elevation view, follow along with these steps.

  1. Open Revit.
  2. I’m going to open our architectural model.
  3. Zoom into a view you want to make an elevation of.
  4. Go to the View Tab.
  5. Click the Elevation button as shown in the Figure below:
  6. In the Properties dialog, make sure Interior Elevation is current.
  7. Place an elevation target as shown in the Figure below.
  8. Once the elevation is placed, hit esc a couple times.
  9. Select the square part of the elevation as shown in the image below.
  10. Hover over one of the blue boxes. Notice it says show arrow. This allows you to add and additional elevation.
  11. Turn on all 4 elevations.
  12. Hit Esc a couple times.
  13. Open one of the elevations by double clicking on the arrow.
  14. Change the scale to ¼”=1’-0”
  15. Select the crop region and adjust the view so it looks similar to the figure below.
