Creating Custom MEP System Types for Ducts and Pipes.
00:06
In many cases, the system types that come with Revit
00:10
will be enough.
00:11
But what if you want something more specific?
00:13
Such as a high pressure supply air system or refrigerant
00:17
piping systems.
00:19
That's where custom system types come into play.
00:24
Custom system types are created by duplicating an existing
00:27
type.
00:28
For example, in the small Medical Center,
00:31
in the project browser in the family nodes,
00:35
I'm expanding the duct system area.
00:39
And then I'm going to select the supply air and click Duplicate.
00:47
On the new supply air choice, I'm
00:50
going to double click slowly so I can rename it,
00:54
and I'm going to call it high pressure supply air.
01:05
Now, let's apply that new duct system
01:07
to one of the existing systems in the project.
01:11
I'm in the O1 ground floor HVAC plan.
01:14
And I'm going to hover over one of the ducts and press Tab
01:18
until I see that the system is highlighted.
01:22
Now, I can use a type selector to change this duct system
01:27
from supply air to high pressure supply air.
01:35
If I try to do the same thing with the return air system,
01:40
it won't work because the new system was created off
01:44
of a supply air system.
01:47
Still, my new duct system is an exact replica
01:50
of the previous system.
01:52
So let's make a change.
01:54
In the project browser, I'm going
01:56
to right click on high pressure supply air and select type
02:01
properties.
02:06
Here are the things that I can control for a duct system--
02:10
the graphic overwrites, the material, calculations.
02:18
And here's a list of what you can change--
02:21
the identity data, this is information found in schedules,
02:26
and the rise drops symbols.
02:29
There's a list of ones you can choose from.
02:33
Now in this case, I'm just going to select
02:35
the graphic overrides.
02:37
So I'm clicking the Edit button, and I'm
02:40
going to see that the color is set to blue,
02:43
but I'm going to change this to red so it's very different.
02:49
Click on K to close all the dialog boxes.
02:54
And back in my drawing, you can see
02:56
the difference between the two supply air systems.
03:01
But what about piping systems, you may ask.
03:05
Well, the process is basically the same.
03:09
I'm switching over to the O1 ground floor HVAC piping view,
03:14
where I have some existing refrigerant lines showing.
03:18
When I check out system type of each line,
03:21
you can see that it's set to other.
03:24
But my system names have terms, like gas in this case.
03:31
And when I select another piping system,
03:39
you can see this one has liquid.
03:42
I want to have a better understanding
03:44
of the uses of these systems, so I'm
03:46
going to create two new pipe types named gas refrigerant
03:50
piping and liquid refrigerant piping.
03:54
As you see, when I open up the piping system types,
03:58
there are a lot of premade systems,
03:60
but none are related to these uses.
04:03
I must start a new system type from an existing one.
04:07
So I'm going to choose other and duplicate it.
04:11
I'm going to select the new one, and then rename it
04:15
to gas refrigerant piping.
04:19
Then I'm going to do this again, right click Duplicate, make
04:24
sure I highlight the new one, and rename
04:27
it liquid refrigerant piping.
04:35
Now, let's take a look at the type properties.
04:38
When I right click on the liquid refrigerant piping,
04:45
I can select type properties.
04:51
You can see that there are a lot of options that are the same as
04:54
ducts, but there are more options for the rise and drop
04:58
symbols.
04:60
Now in this case, I'm just going to set up
05:02
the graphic overrides.
05:04
For liquid, I'm going to set it to orange.
05:10
And I'm going to click OK, and close that.
05:17
For the gas, I'm going to set that style, the type
05:21
properties, the graphic overwrites,
05:24
and I'm going to set that to purple.
05:27
Going to click OK until I get out of the dialog box.
05:32
Now, before I leave the piping system types,
05:35
I want to show you one other twist.
05:38
When I select domestic cold water, in the type properties,
05:42
you can see that there are a lot more options
05:44
in the mechanical area rather than just calculations.
05:49
This is also true for the domestic hot water.
05:53
But it's not for the fire protection
05:56
systems, or for others, like the sanitary systems.
06:04
So keep this in mind if these options--
06:07
if you're creating new piping systems.
06:12
Now, let's assign these new systems
06:14
to some existing piping.
06:16
I'm hovering over, and then pressing Tab
06:20
until I see the system highlighted.
06:24
Notice that this system name, when I select it, is gas.
06:28
So I'm going to use those type selector
06:31
and change this one to gas refrigerant piping.
06:37
When I do so, you can see that it turns purple.
06:43
I'm going to repeat this with the piping next to that.
06:48
So, I highlight, Press Tab, select when I see my system,
06:57
and you can see that the system name is liquid,
06:60
so I'm changing this to liquid refrigerant piping.
07:04
And this one turns orange.
07:07
Of course, you can create totally new piping systems
07:10
as well.

04:38
When I right click on the liquid refrigerant piping,
04:45
I can select type properties.
04:51
You can see that there are a lot of options that are the same as
