Create materials and material libraries

00:04

In this video you'll learn how to create and edit materials

00:09

and more specifically

00:11

you'll create an 8" tile material and

00:14

define the graphics and appearance properties.

00:18

You'll then see how to create a material

00:20

library and add materials to the material library

00:32

in rev it

00:33

materials control how model elements display in views and rendered images.

00:40

To see all of the materials in your project,

00:43

switch to the managed tap

00:47

in the settings panel,

00:48

click materials to open the material browser

00:55

in the material browser.

00:56

You can see a large list of materials and you can browse through the list

01:02

or you can search for a specific material by typing in the search field.

01:08

Additionally,

01:10

at the bottom of the material browser you can expand

01:14

home and then see the material libraries that are open

01:21

in this example there's just currently won the A. E. C.

01:24

Materials library and you can expand that to then

01:28

access the various categories of materials and materials.

01:35

For this example I'll type tile into the search field

01:40

and then the list is filtered to just the materials that contain the phrase tile.

01:47

Additionally

01:49

at the bottom

01:50

the list is filtered as well to show the materials in the material libraries

01:56

that contain

01:57

the phrase tile.

01:59

In order to add a material from a library

02:03

into the project.

02:05

You can hover over a material listing

02:08

and then click the arrow button where the tool tip says adds material to document

02:16

And when you do

02:17

that material will be added to the project and

02:20

will be available for use in your project.

02:25

If you do not see a material that you need,

02:27

you can create a new material or you can duplicate an existing material.

02:34

For example, when you right click a material

02:36

there are two duplicate options,

02:39

duplicate material and assets which will duplicate the material

02:44

as well as duplicate the material assets.

02:49

The second option is duplicate using shared assets.

02:53

When you use that option,

02:55

it will duplicate the material but keep the same material assets.

03:00

In other words,

03:01

they will be shared between the duplicated the new

03:05

duplicated material as well as the material that was duplicated

03:11

for this example I'll select duplicate material and assets

03:16

and now I can enter a new name for this material.

03:21

I'll change it to 8" and then press enter

03:27

and I can simply select it when I select it in the material browser.

03:31

Then all of the material parameters will appear over in the material editor.

03:39

There are several tabs on the identity tab.

03:42

You can control the material name as well as descriptive information,

03:48

any product information that you want to add and

03:51

additionally rabbit annotation information which contains the material.

03:56

Keynote parameter

03:59

on the graphics tab.

04:01

You can control the shading which will control

04:05

how the material appears in a shaded view.

04:09

And then you can also control the surface pattern and cut pattern

04:15

for this example

04:17

the under surface pattern and foreground. I'll click in the pattern field

04:23

and it opens up the fill patterns. Dialogue

04:26

and I can select either a drafting pattern or a model pattern.

04:31

I'll switch to the select model and then scroll down

04:36

and I'll select eight inch tile and then click OK

04:41

under the under surface pattern, under background.

04:45

When I click in that field you can see that only drafting is available.

04:50

So for foreground patterns you can select either

04:56

a drafting pattern or a model pattern.

04:60

But for the background fill patterns, you can only select drafting patterns.

05:06

So that's something you need to be aware of.

05:09

And then similarly you could add a cut pattern if needed.

05:13

If that material requires a cut pattern depending on

05:17

how it's going to be used in the model.

05:18

You could specify that as well

05:22

on the appearance tab.

05:23

You can control how the material will appear in a realistic

05:29

visual style as well as when the material is rendered.

05:34

And then there are also physical and thermal assets that can

05:38

be modified and those are used for analysis of that material.

05:47

At this point we have a new material created

05:50

Now let's take a look at how to create a new material library.

05:55

How clear the search field here

05:58

and then at the bottom

06:01

I will expand the button at the left here which says creates,

06:05

opens and edits user defined libraries.

06:08

And when you expand that

06:10

you can choose to open an existing library.

06:13

So if you already have a company material library that you need to

06:18

open you can choose that option or you could create a new library.

06:23

I'll select that option.

06:25

And then for the name I will enter

06:29

insert prep and then click save.

06:32

And now I have a new material library created

06:37

called cert prep.

06:39

When I right click the cert prep material library I can

06:45

create a category so I could create a category of materials.

06:49

I could rename it several options here.

06:53

I'm going to go back to the search field and type

06:56

tile and I'm going to look for the new material.

06:60

We just created our eight inch tile and I'm gonna right click that material

07:05

and then I'll select add to and now I can see my favorites,

07:10

I can add it to favorites and then I can also

07:12

add it to the new material library that we just created.

07:17

So I'll select certain prep

07:20

and now I've just added our new material to the cert prep material library.

07:28

Once again we could add additional categories to that material library.

07:34

Then we could go through here and add additional materials and then

07:37

we'd be able to use that material library and other projects.

07:41

And once again, if you open up a new project,

07:44

simply expand this button at the bottom and select open existing library and

07:50

then all the materials that you added would be available in that project

the list is filtered as well to show the materials in the material libraries

01:57

01:59

In order to add a material from a library

02:03

into the project.

02:05

You can hover over a material listing

02:20

will be available for use in your project.

02:25

If you do not see a material that you need,

02:27

you can create a new material or you can duplicate an existing material.

02:34

For example, when you right click a material

02:36

there are two duplicate options,

02:39

duplicate material and assets which will duplicate the material

02:44

02:49

The second option is duplicate using shared assets.

When you use that option,

02:55

it will duplicate the material but keep the same material assets.

03:00

In other words,

03:01

they will be shared between the duplicated the new

03:05

duplicated material as well as the material that was duplicated

03:11

for this example I'll select duplicate material and assets

and now I can enter a new name for this material.

03:21

I'll change it to 8" and then press enter

03:27

and I can simply select it when I select it in the material browser.

03:31

Then all of the material parameters will appear over in the material editor.

03:39

There are several tabs on the identity tab.

05:29

05:34

And then there are also physical and thermal assets that can

05:47

05:55
