Create void forms

Create void forms and use object faces to host linework.

Tutorial resources

These downloadable resources will be used to complete this tutorial:

00:04

And here we can see that we have some solid forms

00:06

and we will create some void forms to cut away from them.

00:11

First, we'll use a void form to create an opening in the side of the building here.

00:17

And to do this, I'll first open up the level one floor plan view.

00:24

Now from the create ribbon on the draw panel here will enable the line drawing tool

00:30

and this will default to be model lines

00:33

and we can see we have a placement plan of level one.

00:36

Now in the view,

00:37

we'll step to this middle reference plane here just outside of the building

00:42

and then we'll sketch across to the right hand side and type in a distance of 40 ft.

00:48

And then we'll sketch vertically up until we get the alignment

00:51

with the existing edge of the model and snap to this.

00:55

And then we draw across to the left hand side and type in a distance of 80 ft

01:00

and that will come vertically down to a line with our first line

01:04

and then we'll click to create an enclosed shape.

01:09

So I haven't got that drawn. I'll click, modify to finish the draw line tool

01:13

and then we'll swap back to the 3D view.

01:16

And now we can see we have that closed shape sitting

01:19

there on level one at the bottom of our building.

01:23

So to create a void form, we'll select these lines

01:26

and then from the modify lines, ribbon tab on the form panel

01:30

under the create form tools, we'll click void form

01:34

and straight away, we can see that that gets extruded into a 3D box.

01:39

And we can tell it's avoid by the transparent orange color.

01:44

And as soon as I click off with this to deselect it,

01:46

we can see that it cuts away from the solid object that it was overlapping

01:50

to leave us the opening that we're looking for

01:54

the void is still in place.

01:55

So if I come over to the edge here and

01:58

start to press the tab key

01:60

to cycle through the different objects,

02:02

we can see that that void gets highlighted and we can click to select it.

02:07

We won't make any changes.

02:08

I'll just click off and then straight away,

02:10

we can see that that opening comes back as the void starts cutting again.

02:17

Looking at the levels in the project,

02:18

we can see we have level two here and we'd like the top of the void to align with that.

02:24

So to do this, we'll use the align tool.

02:26

So from the modify ribbon on the modified panel here, we'll click the align to

02:31

and then we'll select level two as the reference to align two.

02:35

And then we can pick the top of the void or the underside of the opening here

02:40

and it will move down to a line to level two.

02:44

We'll click to close the padlock

02:46

which will create an alignment constraint between the top of the void and that level

02:50

meaning that should the level move in the future,

02:52

then the top of the void and the other side of the opening will also move.

02:58

Now panning around here,

02:60

we want to create

03:01

another insert on the end of the building here.

03:04

And to do this,

03:05

we draw some lines that are hosted on the face at the end.

03:10

So we'll go up to the modify ribbon tab and from the draw panel,

03:13

we'll click the rectangle tool.

03:15

We can see that that will enable model lines.

03:18

Now we need to make sure that we have drawn face clicked

03:22

as this then means that as we go over the model, we can see faces being highlighted

03:27

and the highlighted face would then be the host for those lines.

03:32

So before I draw, I'll go up to the options bar and we'll set an offset value of 2 ft.

03:37

And now coming into the view here, we'll hover over the face at the end

03:41

and then we'll get the end point at the top left corner.

03:45

Now as we draw, we can see, we have the rectangle being drawn on that face.

03:49

The offset is to the outside.

03:51

So I'll use the space bar and a keyboard to flip it to the inside.

03:54

And then we can snap to the bottom right corner to draw the rectangle.

03:59

So now that's drawn, I'll click, modify to finish drawing rectangles

04:03

and I'll come back and select an edge here on this face.

04:07

We can see that if I use the 3D drag controls here and drag this out,

04:11

then those lines will follow with it

04:13

because they're hosted by that face.

04:18

I'll go up to the quick access tool bar and click undo to undo the change we just made

04:23

and that will turn these lines into a void form. So

04:26

with them selected, we'll go out to the modify lines, ribbon tab

04:30

and on the form panel here under the create form tool, we'll click void form

04:35

and this will then be extruded back into the solid shape that's hosting it here.

04:40

And if I click off of this,

04:41

we can see we have quite a deep recess into the solid form here.

04:46

We'd like to get rid of the bottom ledge here

04:48

and to do this, we'll use the align tool.

04:51

So from the modify ribbon tab on the modify panel, we'll click the align tool.

04:56

Now we'll go over the edge here and we may need to

04:59

use the tab key to select the underside of the solid.

05:03

And then we can click on the underside of the void object here.

05:07

And then as the void is now aligned with the bottom of the solid.

05:10

It will cut right through that.

05:12

So click, modify to finish the align tool.

05:15

I would like to adjust the depth of the reset here as well.

05:19

So we can select the back face

05:22

and we can see that this does have the 3D drag controls that we could use. But

05:25

we'll edit the temporary dimension here and we'll change this to be 6 ft.

05:30

And we can see now that's created the recess that

05:32

we're looking for in the end of our building here.

05:38

Looking back round at the opening side here,

05:40

we'd like to create some kind of canopy that follows around the edge of the opening.

05:45

And to do this, we first need to draw the shape of the canopy to follow the edge.

05:50

So I'll go to the level one plan view

05:53

and now we need to be able to get this accurately

05:56

and to see where the edge of the opening is.

05:59

So from the view control bar, we click on the visual style tools here

06:03

and we'll stop it from shaded to wire frame.

06:05

And now we can see through that including where the

06:08

opening is and we can now sketch that accurately.

06:13

Now from the modify ribbon on the draw panel,

06:16

we'll click on the line tool to draw two D model lines.

06:20

And now we can first snap to the corner of the opening

06:23

here that we have and we draw vertically down by 10 ft,

06:27

we then draw across to the right here by 2 ft

06:31

and then we'll come vertically back up and we'll snap

06:33

to the edge of the existing solid form here.

06:38

And then we'll come across and snap to the end of

06:40

the first line that we drew to create that enclosed shape.

06:43

So I haven't got the lines drawn, I'll click, modify

06:46

and then swap back to the 3D view.

06:48

And we can see those lines down at level one just by the edge of the opening. Here,

06:54

I would like to sweep these around the edge of the opening to create the canopy.

06:58

And to do this, we need to select the edges of the form that create that opening.

07:04

So if I put my mouse over one of the edges here

07:07

and start to press the tab key on the keyboard,

07:10

we can cycle through all of the objects until we have that one edge highlighted

07:14

and then click to select it.

07:16

And now

07:17

we need to repeat this for the remaining three edges. So

07:21

we'll hover near the edge here

07:23

and press and tab until it highlights.

07:25

And this time,

07:26

we need to make sure we hold the control key down to add it to our selection.

07:30

And then once again, we'll do this with this edge.

07:32

So hovering over pressing tab and then holding control to select.

07:38

And then finally, for the last edge here, we'll

07:40

tap through and help control to select,

07:44

we also need to have the shapes that we've just drawn, selected.

07:47

So again, holding the control key down, we can click on this now

07:52

and that we can head up to the modify lines, ribbon tab.

07:55

And from the form panel here, we can click to create a solid form

07:59

and then that two D shape will be swept

08:01

around the edges of the void there that we've created

08:05

to give us the canopy that we're looking for.

08:07

And finally earlier in the video,

08:09

we created an alignment constraint between level two and the top of the void.

08:13

So if I now select level two,

08:15

you can see we've got a temporary dimension here and it's currently 15 ft.

08:19

So we'll click on this and I'll change it to be 20 ft.

08:22

And once that's applied, we can see level two move up, but also the opening moves up

08:27

and the canopy with it

08:29

as that canopy is created by the edges of that opening.

08:33

And that now finishes creating the voice that we need for this model.

Video transcript
