Layers and Object Lister in Alias

Organize geometry onto layers and folders, and create automatic symmetry for your designs.

00:02

We can organize geometry with layers using either the Layers Bar

00:06

or the Object Lister.

00:09

And they both display the same layers

00:11

and both can be scrolled.

00:14

But the Object Lister can also be resized to

00:16

show more layers and to display long layer names.

00:21

You can select layers and use the right mouse to access the menu,

00:25

and for example, create a folder to group those layers together

00:29

and I can rename that with a double click.

00:32

And here this displays in a typical expanded folder view.

00:36

But up here in the Layers Bar, you need to go into the folder to see the layers

00:40

and then back out again.

00:43

Visibility in the scene is on this square

00:46

in both.

00:48

And you can use the Alt key to isolate just one layer in the scene

00:53

On the menu, you've got these three states

00:57

and those have a shortcut icon up here on the layer.

00:60

So I can make it Reference, so that the geometry can't be selected but can be snapped to,

01:05

or totally Inactive,

01:08

or back to P for Pickable.

01:11

And here is a symmetry display that creates a mirrored instance in the scene.

01:16

And if the mirror direction isn't right,

01:17

then I can use Set Symmetry Plane and then just adjust this manipulator.

01:25

Back on the square,

01:26

if I use the right mouse instead of the left, I can set the layer color,

01:30

and this changes the wireframe color in the scene.

01:35

Now this bright blue is the creation layer,

01:37

and so if I add a new layer, for example, then that one gets set as the creation layer

01:43

so that when I place some geometry,

01:45

that's the layer it gets assigned to.

01:48

Or if I set the tires

01:50

or the wheels,

01:52

then you can see that the geometry gets assigned to the active creation layer.

01:57

But if we forget to set that,

01:58

then we simply select the objects and then assign them afterwards.

02:05

So all the tools also appear on the Layers Bar menu

02:09

or on this shortcut bar below each layer.

02:13

But the reason this is called the Object Lister is because this is

02:16

where we can see the geometry in the scene as object nodes.

02:20

And the right mouse menu is different when I use it on a layer

02:23

to the one I get on the object level.

02:26

So here I can, for example, un-group this

02:30

or I could select these two and group them.

02:34

I can select components within a group hierarchy and delete them maybe

02:39

and generally work with objects the way we would in the scene.
