Project setup and start-up for structural modeling

The power of working with Revit is the ability to have project templates that allow for consistent working practices. In this course, we will look at how to build a template that can be used for the creation of a structural model ready for Analysis in Robot: from Creating structural analytical views to Structural and project settings, and finally custom structural families.

Setting up the structural template

By using a template when starting a project, we can make sure that we have a consistent approach to our workflow. Also, a good template means we can get straight into our work without wasting time configuring Settings and Views. We only need to do some things once; this will save time each time we start a new project.

This content takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. By the end, you should be able to:

  • Create new levels and structural views.
  • Set structural settings and project units.
  • Define default schedules.

  • Please make sure you have the Revit software loaded.

Defining project settings

Although we can preconfigure a lot of settings in our template, sometimes we might what to look at settings specific to the type of project we are working on. We will look at how to create new Structural Load Settings, how to create structural materials that can be used in analysis, and how we can control the display of our annotations.

Understanding structural families

Revit comes with a very comprehensive library of Structural Column and Framing families; however, sometimes there will be a need to create a new family. We will look at how to set the correct structural parameters so our new families can be exported correctly to other software, such as Robot, and what the composition of a Revit Family is. Finally, we will look at some advanced Structural families.
